In this document, we provide 3 key ways on creating an exceptional finance CV
HOW TO CREATE AN EXCEPTIONAL CV
Impact
First of all, is your CV showing clear and consistent impact? This is throughout your CV — including in education, career and extra-curricular achievements. Showing impact in your CV is vitally important. It will enable you to demonstrate that you are proactive and will excel in whatever you are tasked with. This is key when applying for an elite corporate career. Such careers typically involved working in small teams. In such teams, each individual is needed to make a substantial contribution, even at a junior level.
Examples of showing impact:
>Are your achievements clearly and logically demonstrated?
>Have you demonstrated what differentiates you from your peer group?
Career experience
Secondly, it is vital to show that you have relevant industry experience. (Without this, you will definitely fail CV stage.) For instance, if applying to an investment bank-based position, do you have prior internships or spring weeks? (If you don’t have this, it is still possible to develop a bank of experience which works as a strong substitute.) In these work experiences, mention what you did. Mention what you gained. Did this experience allow you to gain a strong understanding of a process? For instance, the revenue synergies in an effectively structured M&A deal?
Examples of strong career experiences:
>Open days, internships and spring weeks
>Other ad-hoc work experiences in financial services-based industries
Extra-curricular activities
Lastly, extra-curricular activities are vital. These show the breadth of your experiences. They also continue the narrative of you as a high-impact and exceptional future hire. It is preferable to add presidency or Director level society positions on your CV. We advise this as you are applying to the most prestigious and challenging careers. Your fellow applicants will also be exceptionally well qualified. They will also have a wide range of experiences. When discussing your society position or other position of responsibility it is vital to show — again — the impact of your role.
Examples of strong leadership positions could demonstrate:
>How you have increased society membership on a yearly basis
> How you have managed the society’s strategy to help it excel, for instance enabling tickets to sell out at the annual ball
